Two aloe vera products sit on the shelf. One is a thick clear gel in a tub or pump bottle. The other is a thin liquid in a one litre bottle. Both say aloe vera on the front, and both cost about the same.

They are not versions of the same thing. They are used differently, made differently, and one of them should never go anywhere near your mouth.

The Short Answer

Aloe vera gel goes on your skin and hair. It is a cosmetic product.

Aloe vera juice is a drink. It is a food or supplement product.

If you want something for sunburn, dry skin or your scalp, you want the gel. If you want something to drink in the morning with water, you want the juice. That covers most people's question.

The rest of this explains why the naming is confusing, and why swapping one for the other is a bad idea in one direction and mostly fine in the other.

Why the Names Are So Confusing

Here is the root of it. The word "gel" is used for two different things.

Inside an aloe leaf there is a clear, jelly-like substance. Botanically, that is called the gel. It is the part used to make both products.

Aloe vera gel the product is that plant material turned into something you can put on your skin. Thickeners are added so it holds together, along with preservatives so it lasts on a bathroom shelf, and often extras like vitamin E or rose water.

Aloe vera juice the product is aloe leaf material processed into a thin drinkable liquid, usually bottled in half litre or one litre sizes.

So both come from the same part of the same plant. What separates them is what was added afterwards and what they were made for.

What Is in Each One

Aloe vera gel is a cosmetic formulation. Even gels marketed as pure or 100 percent contain more than aloe, because pure aloe pulp will not stay stable in a jar. Expect a thickening agent such as xanthan gum, a preservative system, and sometimes fragrance, colour or added vitamins. Read the ingredient list and aloe should be at or near the top.

Aloe vera juice is a food product. Unsweetened Ayurvedic style juices are usually aloe with water and sometimes a small amount of citric acid as a preservative. Blends add other ingredients, so aloe with amla or aloe with triphala are different products again. Some bottled aloe drinks sold as soft drinks contain a lot of added sugar, which is a separate category from the one litre wellness bottles.

Can You Drink Aloe Vera Gel?

No. This is the important one.

The gel in a tub or pump bottle is made to sit on skin. It contains cosmetic preservatives, thickeners and often fragrance, none of which are meant to be swallowed. Some also contain alcohol.

The fact that aloe vera juice is drinkable does not make aloe vera gel drinkable. They are regulated as different product types for exactly this reason. If a product is sold for skin, use it on skin.

Can You Put Aloe Vera Juice on Your Skin or Hair?

This direction is generally fine, and plenty of people do it.

Aloe vera juice is thin, so it behaves more like a toner or a scalp rinse than a moisturiser. Some people decant a little into a spray bottle for the face, or work it through the scalp before shampooing.

Two practical points. It will not sit on the skin the way a gel does, because there is no thickener holding it in place. And once you open a food product and start using it on your face, hygiene matters, so decant a small amount rather than dipping into the bottle.

If you have a blend with amla, triphala or added flavouring, stick to drinking it. Those extra ingredients were chosen for taste and for drinking, not for skin.

Which One to Buy

Buy the gel if you want: an after sun soother, a light face moisturiser, something for a dry or itchy scalp, a hair styling aid, or a base for homemade skincare.

Buy the juice if you want: something to drink with water in the morning, usually thirty millilitres mixed into a glass, once or twice a day. Buy both if: you want aloe in your routine inside and out. They are not substitutes for each other, so owning one does not cover the other job.

A note on size. Gels come in small tubs, usually one hundred fifty to five hundred grams, and last a long time because you use very little. Juices come in half litre and one litre bottles, and at thirty millilitres a day a one litre bottle lasts about a month. Check the after opening guidance on a juice bottle before buying the large size, because several brands recommend finishing it faster than a month.
